Built a working 4-bit ALU from NAND, NOR, and XOR logic on breadboards, with LEDs showing inputs, operation, and output.
Designed and built a functional arithmetic logic unit (ALU), a core processor component, combining digital logic theory with hands-on prototyping.
What I did
- Circuit design: built a 4-bit ALU from NAND, NOR, and XOR logic capable of addition, subtraction, AND, OR, and bitwise negation, using quad NAND ICs, LEDs, and resistors.
- Schematics and debugging: drew full circuit diagrams and iterated to fix carry propagation, signal interference, and power efficiency issues.
- Prototyping: wired the ALU by hand on breadboards, with LEDs giving real-time feedback on inputs, the selected operation, and the output.
